2017 Artists offer no apologies at Wellington HELP fundraiser

Small Sculpture Prize 2017 Gala Award Ceremony

I am a self-taught artist based in Wellington, New Zealand.

My hand-cut paper-works draw on geometric forms found both natural and man-made environments. I’ve gained inspiration from years travelling, where I lived in large metropolitan cities and historical cities – which exposed me to a variety of different cultures.

These paper-works use a surgical blade, and I find the process of cutting away slowly exposes the design from the paper. There is something quite pure and thought provoking in turning the work over to see the piece revealing itself.

The process and exploration of commissioned work has also widened my practice. Working in collaboration with another, incorporating their ideas and perspectives, forces and encourages me to think outside the box. This type of engagement has added an extra layer of growth to my own work and improved the commissioned project. It is a shared progress I really enjoy.

In more recent years I have also been experimenting with the concept of positive and negative space. The use of layering in my pieces creates a sense of depth and movement, and it is a technique I am keen to explore.

Whether my own art or a paper-work envisaged and created with and for another, transforming a lifeless two-dimensional substrate into an almost animate object is a true joy.
